Linking from Google Scholar to MUHC or McGill University electronic journals

Did you know that when you find an article that interests you in Google Scholar, you can quickly check its availability by activating your library’s Link Resolver? A Link Resolver connects users with electronic journals licensed by their library and provides a link to the full text when available.

In order to activate your library’s link resolver in Google Scholar, you must first configure your individual settings. It is recommended that you connect to your personal Google account, in order to save your setting regardless of the computer you are using.

McGill University researchers, faculty, residents or medical students should configure their settings in order to activate the McGill Library’s link resolver.

  1. Go to scholar.google.ca
  2. Click on “Settings
  3. Click on “Library links“, on the left
  4. Run a search for: McGill
  5. Select the “McGill University Library – McGill Library Full Text” option
  6. Save your settings

All other hospital staff (allied health professionals, pharmacists, administrative personnel, etc.) without a McGill ID and password should configure their settings in order to activate the MUHC Libraries’ link resolver. Please note that although Google Scholar is accessible from anywhere, the MUHC link resolver will only work when accessing Google Scholar from computers connected to the MUHC network.

  1. Go to scholar.google.ca
  2. Click on “Settings
  3. Click on “Library links“, on the left
  4. Run a search for: MUHC
  5. Select the “Bibliothèques du Centre universitaire de santé McGill / McGill University Health Centre Libraries – Accès CUSM / MUHC Access” option
  6. Save your settings

Although Google Scholar is accessible from anywhere, the MUHC library tool will only work when accessing Google Scholar from computers connected to the MUHC network.

Once activated, your library’s link resolver will appear as a clickable text, usually to the right of the reference in your search results.

  • For the MUHC, “Accès CUSM / MUHC Access” is displayed
  • For McGill, “McGill Library Full text” is displayed

If the link does not appear it can be found by clicking on “More“, beneath the references:

Although possible, we do not recommend that McGill users configure their Google Scholar settings to activate both the MUHC and McGill link resolvers. Despite having selected two library links, only one will appear for each reference, seemingly at random. If you choose to activate the library links of both institutions, remember to click on the “More” option beneath each reference to display both links.

If you have questions about this tool or the databases available via the MUHC Libraries’ website, please contact your hospital librarian.
