MUHC Libraries offer different venues for training including lectures, workshops and small group sessions.

Individual and small group instruction is available at your hospital library upon request. Suggestions for others topics not listed below are welcome.

Medline via Ovid

The premier database in the health sciences, Medline contains citations to articles from international biomedical journals published since 1946. Medline is also available via PubMed, a freely available search interface.

PubMed

PubMed provides access to Medline, the NLM’s database of citations and abstracts in the fields of medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, health care systems, and preclinical sciences. It comprises over 23 million citations from over 5,500 peer-reviewed journals going back to 1946. It has international coverage, but focuses on North American publications. It is maintained by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), and is made freely available by the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM).

CINAHL

CINAHL, the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, is the premier database in nursing and allied health literature. CINAHL indexes articles from approximately 5400 journal titles published since 1937, as well as books and dissertations. Access to full text articles from over 1300 journals is provided through CINAHL Complete.

Embase

Embase, the Excerpta Medica database, is a bibliographic database specializing in the biomedical and pharmaceutical field, containing references to articles from over 7,500 journals published since 1974. International in scope, with a journal collection from more than 90 countries, Embase features in-depth, extensive indexing of pharmaceutical research, making it one of the most widely used bibliographic databases in the health sciences.

APA PsycINFO

APA PsycINFO is a specialized database produced by the American Psychological Association covering literature in psychology and psychiatry, as well as on the psychological aspects of other disciplines, including medicine, nursing, sociology, pharmacology, physiology and linguistics. APA PsycINFO indexes over 2,450 journals published since 1806, as well as books, book chapters and dissertations. It is international in scope, with titles from more than 49 countries.

The Cochrane Library: Finding the Evidence

The Cochrane Library is an evidence based resource that simultaneously searches 6 international biomedical databases containing over 770,000 records published since 1898. The main component of the Cochrane Library is the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (CDSR), a database that provides access to Cochrane Systematic Reviews, high quality reviews on the effects of healthcare interventions. The Cochrane Library also includes citations from the Database of Abstract of Reviews of Effects (DARE), the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), the Cochrane Database of Methodology Reviews (CDMR), the Health Technology Assessment Database (HTAD) and the National Health Service Economic Evaluation Database(NHSEED).

Using EndNote to Manage Bibliographies

EndNote is a bibliographic management software program that allows you to save and organize references from your online literature searches, create bibliographies, cite references within your manuscript and share your references with others.

In this session, learn how to:

  • Create, search and organize a personal EndNote library
  • Import references from your literature searches
  • Obtain the complete text of articles
  • Insert references from EndNote into a Microsoft Word document
  • Share your references with others

Web of Science and Beyond: Tracking Who’s Citing Whom

Web of Science is a multidisciplinary bibliographic database of more than 12,000 high impact journals worldwide, including Open Access journals and conference proceedings. It is most notably used for citation tracking, or cited reference searching, giving users a more complete picture of the research in their field.

In this session, learn how to:

  • identify research trends and research collaborators
  • find how many times a known article has been cited and who cited it
  • find a journal’s impact factor
  • export results and manage your searches and automatic alerts
